Our Lord and Saviour issued a stern warning that the road to eternal destruction was a broad road and many travel on this road. The way that leads to life is a narrow way and many false teachers in sheep’s clothing will deceive the masses – Matthew 7:13-15.
We recently watched a DVD series on this topic relating to the “Emerging Church Movement.” Every Christian is urged to become more aware of this subtle movement that seeks to reshape the Gospel to make it more seeker friendly. At first glance it may appear benign. Close scrutiny of this new age movement reveals the opposite. As the world faces one crisis after the next mankind becomes more vulnerable to accepting pragmatic solutions without considering the grave consequences. A Gospel without the Cross is not the true Gospel. A new Gospel is being taught to church people worldwide that undermines the authority of the Bible and offers a substitute message. Undiscerning believers who are content to “go with the flow” are drifting closer and closer to the waterfall of disaster. Mysticism is the belief that God can be experienced through contemplation. People are bent on “touching God, feeling God and experiencing God.” Oneness or holism seems to be the object of mysticism. Becoming one with God until the subject becomes the object is the theme of mysticism. This false teaching suggests that all of us are microcosms (tiny particles) of a bigger macrocosm (larger energy source) and that by aligning ourselves with the cosmic pool we become one with God. This concept promotes the “god within” theory leading to the belief that we are our own God. The Emerging Church Movement seeks to change the way people think about God and initiate them into a collective religion that harmonises all faiths, a chameleon religion that suits all.
We at St Marks assert the authority of the Bible and vehemently oppose this sinister movement sweeping the world. Bible Christianity is being overwhelmed by this hodgepodge movement. This is a call to arms against a growing movement that will take captive the uninformed and naive. Let us put on the whole armour of God (Ephesians 6).
A booklet and DVD order form, on this topic, is available from St Marks Bookshop.
